Nicola Hicks

Nicola Hicks is a sculptural artist who is interested in the links between humans and animals she mostly sculpts out of plaster and straw which gives her work a textural look, but lots of her work has also been cast in bronze from these initial straw and plaster sculptures.

I think the textured nature of her sculptures gives the stationary sculptures movement, which is important given that they are based on animals and humans. Shapes like the lion are made in very traditional sculptures round the world, and the way we are used to seeing them is in very smooth metal, so its refreshing that Nicola has given them back their fur.
